Currently a Post-Graduate student at the Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester, UK), Cody is currently studying with Steven Mead. His earlier teachers included Dr. Lois Alexander, Dr. Chuck Guy, Mr. Phil Sinder, and Mr. Mark Kellogg. He began the euphonium in fifth grade, when he thought it held the best qualities of the trumpet and trombone. Learning that it had its own special traits only impassioned him more. He has competeed in local (winning the A. Raymond Roth competition in 2002), statewide (Michigan Youth Concerto Competition, as a finalist in 2002 and semi-finalist two years previeous), and international level (as a semi-finalist at the Leonard Falcone Euphonium.Tuba Student Competition, 200-2002, and the International Euphonium/Tuba Young Artist Competition in 2000). As a member of various ensembles, Cody has performed at Carnegie Hall (Eastman Wind Ensemble, 2005), and in Japan, Taiwan and Macao (2004). He has also performed in Denmark (back in his "Jazz years" 1997), and Canada (2000, 1996). In 2002, he appeared as a soloist with the Genesee Wind Symphony. He has also given recitals in Flushing, Michigan (most recently in May 2005), Rochester, New York, and Manchester, England. As a collaborative artist, Cody has worked with his brother's Chicago-based performance troupe, the Nocturnal. In 2003, he wrote music to accompany their performance of "All is Fair in Sex and War," a modern setting of Aristophanes' "Lysistrada", which was presented in several mid-west cities. He has also written music for Alexandra Fol ("Epic!" for organ), and Hannah Whitehead ("Fantasia for Hannah" solo cello). Current pieces on his writing board include "This Close to Paradise" for euphonium, and the beginning of an opera, "Daimonji," set in Kyoto. 10/4/2005 |
